Denise

Denise J. Cai received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of California in San Diego in 2004 where she completed an honors thesis under the direction of Ebbe Ebbesen. While initially planning to pursue a law degree, she was captivated by the field of learning and memory and instead pursued a doctoral degree in psychology and behavioral neuroscience. She earned her PhD in 2010 at UC San Diego with Drs. Sara Mednick, Stephan Anagnostaras, and Michael Gorman. Denise completed her postdoctoral training with Alcino Silva at UCLA in 2017 with the support of an NRSA from NIMH. She joined the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as an Assistant Professor in 2017, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022, and received tenure in 2023. She has been named an Allen Institute Next Generation Leader, an American College of Neuropsychopharmacology Member, and a Klingenstein-Simons Fellow. Denise has been awarded a McKnight Memory and Cognitive Disorders Award, a One Mind Rising Star Award, and an NIH Director’s New Innovator Award.

Service for Broader Outreach and Engagement

  • The Cai Lab has hosted 3 high school interns, including Anthony Imbert (Posse STEM Scholar), as part of the Sherman Scholars Program at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

  • Served as a mentor during a Society for Neuroscience-sponsored social for underrepresented people in STEM

  • Hosted by the Trainee Health and Wellness Committee at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

  • The Cai lab hosted students from the Harlem Educational Activities (HEAF) Program for a 6-week program of remote learning about foundational concepts in neuroscience and themes related to careers in neuroscience. Undergraduate interns, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows served as near-peer and senior mentors.

  • Invited presentation (via Zoom) to the Board of Trustees and Major Donors hosted by the Friedman Brain Institute and the Office for Development at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to discuss the importance of basic science and translational research in trauma.

  • Invited presentation hosted by the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation in New York for guests from the Philanthropists Circle of China and from prominent science research funding agencies in the US.
